SIKH WOMEN
Here is what some scriptures say about women.
O women! These mantras are given to you equally (as to men). May your thoughts, too, be harmonious. May your assemblies be open to all without discrimination. Your mind and consciousness should be harmonious. I (the rishi) give you these mantras equally as to men and give you all and equal powers to absorb (the full powers) of these mantras.” Rigveda 10-191-3.
In the Mahabharat Bhishma said, "There is no greater guru than the mother."
The place given to women in Sanatan Dharma is unparalleled. The Indian word for wife is 'pathni' or 'dharmapathni', one who leads the husband on the path of dharma. They were also called Sahadharmacharini, one who walks alongside her husband on the path of righteousness. During Hindu marriage ceremonies the woman walks in front of the man for three circumambulations, a practice discarded in the Sikh Anand Karaj. The tradition of Swayamvar allowed women to choose their own husband.
All our Gods have a feminine principle, in fact the feminine Adi Shakti is the primal moving force from whom came the Aum and then ether, wind, fire, water and earth, all the galaxies emanated from her and finally the human. Shiva and Shakti are ever united in the Ardhanarishvara together a composite whole. In fact there were many Vedic women Rishis who contributed equally to the Vedas for e.g. Lopamudra, Aditi, Brahmajaya, Apala, Shashwati. Till today women take part in all activities, mantra chanting, discussion and debates, interpretation of scriptures, nothing is barred for them.
