View of Diskit Gompa from Maitreya Buddha hill. "The cultural significance of Tibetan monastery is due to the fact that it was set up by the 1st Dalai Lama in 1447". It was raining when we reached so pics not very clear. Numerous chortems enroute to the monastery. It is quite a climb up by car.

There are bikers and bikers in Ladakh. Parking area of Diskit gompa. From here it is a short climb to the gompa. Royal Enfield bikes all the way.

Entrance to Gompa. On left is prayer wheel. It has an auspicious decorative border. Red is considered auspicious in Buddhism and is often used on entrances in combination with blue and yellow.

"This monastery is of the Gelugpa sect (Yellow Hat) of Tibetan Buddhism,  founded by Changzem Tserab Zangpo, a disciple of Tsong Khapa, founder of Gelugpa, during the 14th century. The monastery’s cupola is same as the Tashilhunpo Monastery of Tibet." Inside there is a Protector God temple, Buddha shakya muni, Kali Mata shrine and 16 Arahat temple.

View scenic Nubra Valley from top of monastery. So happy to be there. Also visit Sand Dunes and double humped camel. Temple darshan closes at 1 for lunch. Reached about 5 minutes late. The monks were nice enough to let me have darshan and seek blessings.

Frescos outside entrance. "The prayer hall of the monastery consists of a statue of Maitreya Buddha, various images of other guardian gods as well as huge drum. "
