Ancient
Indian folk paintings have been passed down from generation to generation and
are still practiced in different parts of the country. Each style of painting
has something unique to offer and one form of painting that has gained a significant
amount of prominence is the ‘Warli Painting’. It is mostly practiced by the adivasis
located in the North Sahyadri range of Maharashtra, predominantly Talasari,
Jawhar, Palghar, Dahanu, Mokhada, and Vikramgardh.
Squares,
Triangles, and Circles are the core components of Warli painting patterns since each shape signifies something in the painting. Circle depicts the sun & moon and triangle has a close co-relation to mountains and trees. Unlike the other shapes, the square has significance to an open land which is also called as 'Chauk' in many regions of Maharashtra.
Every Warli
Painting has a Chauk, either the Lagnachauk or Devchauk. Devchauk is a
depiction of Palaghata, the mother goddess and it symbolizes fertility. 'Lagna' in lagnachauk means 'Marriage' and it is usually painted by women when there is an occasion of marriage in their family or village. It is meant to bring peace and prosperity in the lives of the newlyweds. Birds, Trees, Men, and Women are widely used in the Warli Paintings. Gods are not depicted in Warli Paintings since there is a belief that Gods are related to spirits in a Human Form.
Warli paintings
are made by adivasis on the walls using non-permanent colors. The roots of
Warli Paintings are still preserved and the core instincts of the art-form are
not impacted by globalization. Some of the ingredients that are used by artists
for the creation of Warli
Paintings are
Henna, Ocre, Indigo, Mud, etc. Warli paintings can be created on surfaces like
Canvas, Cloth, Handmade paper, Ivory Sheet, etc.
Due to
India’s richness in arts & culture, art collectors have always shown
interest in Indian art form. Art collectors understand the subject of art in
great detail and hence the addition of a painting form like Warli Painting to
their collection is something that might make them feel proud.
However,
Art collectors have a huge problem with Art Discovery since they cannot cover
all the art exhibitions that might be happening in different cities of India.
On the other hand, established as well as emerging artists are always on the
lookout for a suitable platform where they can showcase their talent to a wider
audience which also includes Art Lovers. Fortunately, with the advent of many
interesting business models emerging around art & e-commerce, artists can
now reach to a wider audience; one such online art-platform is Gallerist.in
Gallerist.in
