- This photo feature tells about 26 Lakes across
India. With global warming and a 140 crore plus population Bharat needs more
lakes. Perhaps, governments can emulate the Maharanas of Udaipur because of
whom Udaipur is called the City of Lakes.
Whilst browsing a site, I got the idea
of putting together names and pictures of lakes. As I started compiling, found
names of others as well. In case I have missed any significant lake names,
please tell.

1. Tso Moriri Lake, Ladakh

The lake is about an eight hour drive
from Leh. From there is a way to trek to Ladakh. I spent the night in a home
stay. There are tents and hotels too. To see album One and album Two
2. Pang Tso Lake, Ladakh
It is very popular. Has tents and

3. Dal Lake, Srinagar is
well known
4. Chandratal Lake,
Himachal Pradesh

Chandratal is about 110 kms from Manali.

5. Sissu Lake, Himachal
Pradesh
Sissu is about 40 kms from Manali.
6. Loktak Lake, Manipur
It is in Morang that is about a two hour
drive from Imphal. It is the largest freshwater lake in the Indian
Subcontinent. To see album
7. Naini Lake, Nainital
Nainital is very popular. Take a train to Kathgodam from where take a taxi to Nainital – is a couple of hours drive. To see album
8. Gurudongmar
Lake, Sikkim

It is at a height of 17,100 feet and is
amongst the 15 highest lakes in the world. Route is Gangtok to Lachen. Spend
night there, next day 3-4 hour drive to the Lake. Have to return to Lachen the

9. Changu Lake, Sikkim
It is 41 kms from Gangtok, takes about
one hour.
10. Pt Tso Lake, Bumla

It is also called Madhuri Dixit Lake

13. Chilika Lake near
Puri, Odisha
Chilika Lake is about 40 kms from Puri.
It is a huge lake that eventually joins the Bay of Bengal. To see album

Madhya Pradesh
Raja Bhoj constructed this lake in the
11th century.
15. Lake Pichola, Udaipur

16. Fateh Sagar Lake,
Udaipur

It was built by Maharana Fateh Sagar
between 1884-1930.
17. Jaisamand Lake, Udaipur
The lake is about 30 minutes drive from
Udaipur. It was built by Maharana Jai Singhji (1653 to 1698). To see album

Maharana Pratap Samadhi is in the lake.
19. Gajner Lake near
Bikaner, Rajasthan
Lake is on the banks of Gajner Palace Hotel i.e. about an hour’s drive from Bikaner. Adjacent to the lake is a wild life sanctuary. To see album
