  • This photo feature, being part three of a series on Khajuraho, tells you about the not so known Chaturbhuj Temple which offers something entirely different. Khajuraho is much more than Kamasutra.

This is the third in a series of photo features on Khajuraho Temples. First was Introduction to Khajuraho. Second was Kandariya Mahadev and Lakshmana Temples. Padavali Temple Morena, near Gwalior) is widely considered the stylistic inspiration for the grandeur seen here.

While the Western Group of Khajuraho captures the world's imagination with its high-octane artistry, the Chaturbhuj Temple offers something entirely different: a moment of profound, quiet divinity. Located approximately 3.5 kms south of the main village in Jatakari, this temple stands as a solitary masterpiece of the late Chandela era, dating back to roughly 1100 AD.

Architectural Grace and Unique Orientation

Wide-angle view of the site.

As seen in the wide-angle view of the site, the temple is strikingly elevated on a massive stone platform known as a jagati. This elevation not only protects the structure but also creates a dramatic silhouette against the Madhya Pradesh skyline. Unlike almost every other temple in Khajuraho that faces the rising sun in the east, Chaturbhuj is uniquely oriented toward the west.

This orientation is a deliberate architectural masterstroke. As the day ends, the setting sun aligns perfectly with the temple’s entrance, casting long, golden fingers of light through the portal to illuminate the deity within.

The Monumental Deity: A Synthesis of Faith

The true marvel of Chaturbhuj is the presiding deity housed in the garbhagriha (sanctum). My close-up photograph captures the staggering detail of this 9-foot-tall monolithic Vishnu murty. Carved from a single block of local sandstone, the figure stands in a graceful tribhanga (triple-bend) pose, a posture of fluid elegance rarely seen in such massive stone works.

Looking closely at the idol and the ornate doorway, one notices a fascinating divine synthesis.

While primarily a four-armed Vishnu, the statue features matted hair characteristic of Lord Shiva and a stance often associated with Lord Krishna, making it a rare "unifying" icon of Hindu worship. The entrance itself is a testament to the artisan's skill, framed by intricate carvings of celestial guardians and floral motifs that draw the eye toward the shadowed sanctum.

The Walls That Speak: Sculptural Mastery

A defining characteristic of Chaturbhuj, as shown in the upward-looking perspectives of the shikhara, is its lack of erotic sculpture. While Khajuraho is famous for its sensual carvings, Chaturbhuj focuses on the celestial and the secular.

The exterior wall is divided into three horizontal bands. These bands are densely populated with:

Surasundaris: Celestial beauties depicted in everyday acts, such as looking into a mirror or adjusting jewelry.

Vidyadharas: Mythical beings shown in flight, adorning the higher levels of the spire.

Ashta-Dikpalas: The guardians of the eight directions, standing watch over the sacred space.

Exterior walls.

The upward sweep of the shikhara (mountain-like spire) symbolizes the devotee's spiritual ascent toward the heavens. The play of light and shadow on these deep carvings, especially during the "golden hour," creates a living tapestry of stone that changes every minute during sunset.

Visiting the Sanctuary

The temple remains a place of active reverence; my photo of visitors ascending the steps shows that even after a millennium, the temple continues to be a destination for spiritual reflection. A broader view of the temple grounds further emphasizes the serenity of this isolated location, nestled amidst the lush greenery of the southern group.

Traveller’s Tips

1. Location: Situated in Jatakari village, about 3.5 km from the main Khajuraho bus stand.

2. Timing: Aim to arrive by 4:30 PM to catch the "Sunset Glow" when the sun's rays touch the feet of the 9-foot Vishnu.

3. Entry: Entry is generally free, and the surrounding gardens offer a quiet space for reflection.

4. Photographer's Note: The high platform offers excellent 360-degree views of the countryside, making it one of the best spots for architectural photography in the region.

Chaturbhuj Temple is more than just a historical relic; it is a masterpiece of light, geometry, and devotion that proves Khajuraho’s brilliance extends far beyond its famous erotic facades. Whether you are a history buff or a sunset chaser, it provides a peaceful, soulful conclusion.
