I first visited the Jatayu Earth's Center five years ago in December 2019, witnessing the monumental creation on the rugged rock of Chadayamangalam.
Returning
in February 2025, I found that the eco-tourism destination had blossomed into a
seamless, world class experience, a perfect tribute where ancient tradition is
preserved with breath taking modern engineering.
The Hero in Stone: A Tale Etched in Time
The heart of the park is the World's Largest Bird Sculpture, a colossal work by sculptor Rajiv Anchal, measuring a spectacular 200 feet long, 150 feet wide, and 70 feet high. It depicts Jatayu, the noble King of Vultures from the epic Ramayana, at the moment he fell, defeated but defiant, after his heroic battle with Ravana to protect Goddess Sita. Naturally, the sculpture is dedicated to the Honour and Safety of Women.
Inside the massive bird, the experience extends beyond the 6D theatre. The entire center is a masterclass in blending art forms. Even the merchandise and cultural representations here draw from Kerala's rich heritage. Visitors will notice designs, such as the elaborate human-figure pictographs sometimes used to spell out phrases like 'Happy Diwali,' that are inspired by the ancient art traditions of the region, echoing the intricate human forms and deities visible in historical murals.
This commitment to indigenous craftsmanship and visual culture—from the monumental Jatayu to the smallest artistic detail—enhances the feeling of stepping back into the era of the Ramayana.
The Story of Jatayu
Jatayu was a loyal, old bird, a demi-god in the form of a vulture, and a dear friend of Lord Rama's father, King Dasharatha. When he saw Ravana abducting Sita on the Pushpaka Vimana, he did not hesitate. Despite his age, he fought the demon king valiantly, trying to stop the chariot.
Ravana, using his powerful sword, severed the bird’s wings, causing him to plummet to the earth. Jatayu held on, wounded and waiting, until Lord Rama arrived to hear the crucial details of the abduction before the Lord blessed him with Moksha (liberation). This act of sacrifice makes the site profoundly sacred.
An Experience of World Class Polish
The
sheer scale of the sculpture is matched by the finesse of the visitor
experience. The logistics are now flawlessly executed.
The
ascent via the Swiss-made cable cars provides a magnificent,
effortless ride to the hilltop, offering a spectacular, 360-degree view of the
valley below. The entire complex operates with commendable efficiency, with
excellent crowd management and high-standard facilities, including
clean restrooms and dedicated water kiosks, living up to international
standards for eco-tourism.
Once
inside the bird, the Multi-Dimensional (6D)
Theatre and Audio-Visual Museum offer an immersive experience,
making the story visceral and real, rather than just reading about it.

made way for the walkway.
The Sacred Markings
The
journey continues just outside the statue. The site is a dual dedication,
honouring both the warrior bird and the deity who blessed him.

sculpture, this temple marks the location where Lord Rama performed the final
rites for Jatayu.
Rama Padam (Holy Footprint): Within the temple complex, the rock preserves the revered gigantic footprint of Lord Sree Ram, a palpable link to the moment of the bird's redemption and the beginning of Rama's mission.
